2002-07-25 - 9:09 a.m. Alright... is it just me, or is "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones a song that white people in particular should maybe consider avoiding when they do karaoke? View the lyrics here and tell me what you think. I'm wondering because two different white boys on two consecutive nights in two different bars have decided that this was best song to sing. It is just another chapter in the story of hipsters and other self-proclaimed progressive, radical, or just "cool" kids declaring their communities postracist and using this as a jumping-off point to do things like parody the Facts of Life (the television show) and have the white dude who plays Tutti scribble brown grease pencil on his face, or to name the new club in town Chop Suey and capitalize on Orientalist kitsch (read an interesting article on this topic here ), or to sing decidedly questionable songs at karaoke and claim that it is actually a progressive and thought-provoking act when someone who "isn't racist" sings it. Whatevs, dude. Postracist is protoboring. Get a life and read a fucking book. I'll post later today in a less grumpy mood.
